This book is a good introduction to applying design thinking to life planning, with an emphasis on careers. The content below includes my interpretation of the book's chapters and key ideas. It is my intent that the review kindles your interest and spurs you on to buy the book.Chapter 1. Start Where You AreThe authors advise readers to accept what you can't change, avoiding so-called "gravity problems," which, by their very nature, cannot be changed.Chapter 2. Building a CompassThis chapter discusses one's Workview (the reason one works) and Lifeview (areas that give life meaning), and encourage readers to align the two to form a Life Compass.Chapter 3. WayfindingThe book defines Wayfinding as figuring out where to go when the destination is not known. The authors emphasize engagement and energy in finding one's way in work and in life.Chapter 4. Getting UnstuckIn this chapter, the book reviews the use of Mind Maps to generate new ideas.Chapter 5. Design Your LivesThe book encourages readers to develop (at least) 3 potential "Lives" and assess them.Chapter 6. PrototypingIn this chapter, the authors encourage testing the potential lives through informational interviews and other techniques to try out the lives in a non-committal way.Chapter 7. How Not to Get a JobChapter 8. Designing Your Dream JobChapters 7 and 8 were disappointing, offering obvious advice such as, "pursue as many job offers as you can," and showed little knowledge or awareness of the today's job search process.Chapter 9. Choosing HappinessThe chapter encourages people to embracing the choices we make, rather than agonizing over them. It especially recommends paying attention to the Basal Ganglia (the ancient base brain) to monitor personal feelings toward potential choices.Chapter 10. Failure ImmunityThe authors recommend learning from one's mistakes, to become "immune" to the sadness of failure.Chapter 11. Building a TeamHere, the authors encourage the reader to engage others toward one's life path.Overall, I found the book interesting with useful elements. The book would be improved by removing chapters 7 and 8, and in their place, adding more examples of people going through life designs and the challenges facing them, especially those wishing to change careers. Recommended for people interested in applying design thinking toward career development.
I'm retired and not only has this book reenergized me, and encouraged me to go beyond myself in my thinking on what are the best things I can do with the rest of my life, but it has also validated several major steps I have taken to make my retirement satisfying to me.
I don't typically make the time to write reviews on Amazon, but I felt compelled to do so here.I spent an immense amount of time in my life in my late 20s reflecting, researching, reading, and stressing about what I wanted to do with my life. I wish I had had this book then. It provides a well-reasoned, systematic, eminently practical, but joyful approach to navigating the (ever-evolving) question of what you want to do with your life, testing and pursuing your hypotheses, and living into the paths you pursue. It's also an interesting read, and taught me a lot about design thinking and even some practical tidbits about behavioral science!(Note that this book has little to do with the concept of "Lifestyle Design" in the Tim Ferriss sense, which involves imagining your dream life - typically one with some sort of dubious passive income stream and frequent travel to low cost-of-living countries. I have mixed feelings about that whole school of thought. This book is just about applying design thinking to the question of what you want to do with your life.)If you're one of those rare people who's 100% at peace with the question of how to chart your course in life, enjoy your good fortune! To everyone else, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Buy it.
I’ve never thought of myself as a designer in anyway but I knew I was stuck. When I came across this book popping up on my kindle screensaver (more than once) I was intrigued. As a health professional and a mom, I’ve encountered many different books, lectures, tools, etc aimed at improving one’s life/work. However, so many of them seem to require all or nothing options or quickly identifying and finding your “passionâ€. As a mom and wife with responsibilities I couldn’t just jump off a cliff with no safety net in sight so I could be happier or more fulfilled on a daily basis. This is the first guidance and way of thinking and approaching life that really resonating with me and felt real and doable. And I loved the emphasis on life as a work in progress that can be enjoyed in its many iterations — how different we might all feel if we remembered to enjoy the journey instead of assuming the happiness and contentment requires us to reach some predetermined and final destination.
This book is the first book I have read, of several, that has given me the guidance and encouragement to actually start building a life I will love living. I say "life" because the process outlined in the book applies to everything you do in moving forward in life. I am getting ready to turn 67 in 4 days. Until I read this book, I felt I had pretty much lived my life and was at a point in life when there was not much hope in trying to change things. I now have a completely new attitude and am excited about designing the years yhat await me. I have recommended this book to all my friends and family. You cannot help but be changed by the wisdom and proven success of its content. Its design principals should form the basis for a required course in every high school. P
I find the five mind-sets described in the book are quite powerful tools. In short, (1) To get unstuck, take progressive actionable steps. (2) To identify what these steps are, try to take different perspectives and come up with ideas for trying. The essence is: Action. If stuck, reframe and action again. Life/career is a journey, so focus more on the process instead of the final result.
Just like every self help book - it is only as good as the motivation and commitment of the person reading it. Having said that -- it is one of the better books on getting into the right mindset to do the right things in life and focusing on what is important in life
